Taken from an idea in 1933 from the King VIII (Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII) that his majesty would like to have an educational park for Yogyakarta people. Then, it was continued by the King VIII and seemed to be another highlight in Yogyakarta. In 1956 Gembira Loka Zoo was opened and comprises a botanical garden, orchid nursery, artificial lake, children's park, numerous bridges across the Gajahwong River, and a collection of approximately 470 animals in 54 acres land. GembiraLoka Zoo is the only completed zoo in Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces. This park zoo is very popular for domestic tourists.
